The North Lambeth Stormwater Management (SWM) Facility P9 project is an important initiative to handle rainwater, addressing drainage needs in London’s fast-growing North Lambeth area. Looking to manage stormwater runoff effectively, reduce the risk of flooding, and improve water quality—in addition to providing a recreation system for the community and enhancing the natural environment—the City engaged us to help.
We led the Class Environmental Assessment (EA) planning process to find a long-term sustainable solution for managing stormwater in this development area that includes drainage from approximately 284 acres (115 hectares). As part of the process, we identified significant concerns with the downstream channel. To address these, we proposed upgrades that included rebuilding the outlet channel into a more natural stream to mitigate environmental impacts, protect nearby cultural areas, and reduce downstream erosion. Our team worked to include stormwater management features into the design of the parks and trails system that connects green spaces and supports walking and biking routes. The naturalized SWM facility also incorporates native plant species to create habitat for pollinators.
With this SWM facility in place, the City is addressing drainage needs and water quality, helping local wildlife, and encouraging people to enjoy nature with a multiuse trail that links the community and connects residents to nearby significant natural heritage areas.
