North Warning System DYE-M Airstrip Investigation and Recommendations
Located in the remote expanse of Cape Dyer, Nunavut, and operated by the Nasittuq Corporation, DYE-M is one of 47 radar sites and five logistics hubs in the North Warning System (NWS). Historically reliant on air transport for staff and supplies, the site faces significant logistical challenges. While a helipad provides limited access, the nearest functional runway lies over 20 kilometres (12 miles) away, reachable only via a snow-prone road requiring costly, frequent maintenance. To overcome these hurdles, Nasittuq engaged our team to assess the feasibility of rehabilitating an abandoned gravel runway—originally built in 1957—and explore alternative landing solutions at the site.
Surrounded by glacial snow tunnels, sheer cliffs, and historic Inuit heritage sites, the DYE-M location required considerations for both environmental stewardship and cultural preservation. Wildlife such as caribou, arctic foxes, and wolves roam the area, adding to the complexity of any work done on the site.
For this project, we combined comprehensive engineering surveys, GPS mapping, and drone-based aerial imaging to deliver high-resolution geospatial data. Coordination played a critical role, particularly with charter flight scheduling and flexible fieldwork planning to reduce downtime in a region defined by unpredictable weather and rugged terrain. Following the investigation, we developed actionable recommendations for runway rehabilitation, improved staff and supply access, and enhanced on-site safety operations.
Originally part of the Cold War-era Distant Early Warning Line, the DYE-M site remains a strategic node within the NWS. This effort will inform long-term maintenance, future infrastructure planning, and community benefits, including collaboration with our Indigenous partners.
