When the Ontario Honda Dealers Indy sought a new home in southern Ontario, the City of Markham saw an opportunity to elevate its profile and bring a major international event to the community. With timelines compressed and high expectations, the City turned to Stantec as its trusted partner to help make the vision a reality. Our team led the multidisciplinary engineering and planning effort required to transform existing public infrastructure into a fully functioning street circuit.
The design created a dual-purpose corridor that functions safely for daily traffic while supporting the high-speed race conditions required during the Indy event. The project included pavement upgrades, localized road widenings, roadway intersection improvements, and integration of parking areas and access routes into the circuit.
With timelines compressed, the team advanced design, approvals, and coordination in parallel. Success depended on strong project management, responsive communication, and the ability to address evolving requirements in real time.
The project also required close collaboration with a significant group of interested parties, including the City of Markham, Regional Municipality of York, Metrolinx, Ministry of Transportation of Ontario, and 407 Express Toll Route. We also collaborated with Toronto and Region Conservation Authority, Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks, and Department of Fisheries and Oceans, each with a distinct approval process. We worked proactively with each agency to resolve concerns and secure expedited approvals.
The project positions Markham to host a major international event, economic benefits, increased visitors, and a new destination experience for the community.
