Transforming a gloomy and outdated aquatic facility into a rejuvenated, attractive, and inspiring modern sports venue
The City of Winnipeg was concerned about asbestos in the ceiling and was looking at other upgrades of its Pan Am Pool. To execute the upgrades safely while also updating the ceiling, the City chose Stantec to oversee a ceiling replacement, acoustical improvement, lighting upgrade, and audio system upgrade.
Our design team used an integrated design approach to have the ceiling, lighting, and audio upgrades complement each other. We designed the new celling around acoustical requirements, to act as a light-reflective surface, and to work with the audio system. Our lighting design team decided to change the lighting concept from direct to indirect, which required a thorough photometric analysis—this included the precise selection and positioning of luminaires and collaboration between lighting and ceiling designers. To improve maintenance, we developed a unique fixture suspension assembly that allows maintenance personnel to retract luminaires into ceiling space, where they can comfortably and safely service fixtures from catwalks.
This project dramatically improved the appearance of the space, as well as its energy efficiency, functionality, and safety. The rejuvenated facility helps attract more young talent into water sports and produce more Manitoba-trained world-class athletes.
