Parkallen Dry Pond

The Parkallen Dry Pond was originally identified as a necessary flood mitigation upgrade following the 2004 flooding events in Edmonton Alberta. At the time, a large number of residential properties in the neighborhood were flooded, and something needed to be done to prevent this from occurring again. We were there to help.

Our team was retained by EPCOR Drainage Services as the prime consultant to complete the design of a new dry pond, from concept validation through to construction. The resulting dry pond will allow excess rainwater to drain into the dry ponds and surrounding overland drainage system to prevent future extreme flooding events. With no major overland storm drainage system in a mature neighborhood, innovative technologies like 2D Direct Rainfall modeling were utilized, leading to the discovery of an additional 6,500m3 of storage requirement and recommendations to install a secondary dry pond. Preliminary and detailed design stages involved environmental site assessments, field surveying, geotechnical investigations, a hydro-geotechnical investigation, and we also carried out various engagement events with the community.

With our assistance, EPCOR and Parkallen residents were able to find a sound solution for future extreme weather events, protect their households, and enhance the local neighborhood for generations to come.
