The Pelly Crossing swimming pool has long been a popular destination for residents, providing access to an indoor swimming pool throughout the summer. However, the original pool was built in 1984 and nearing the end of its serviceable life. The Government of Yukon retained our team to design a new facility to replace the aging community pool.
Our design addressed a number of concerns with the original structure, such as lack of ventilation in the building, unsafe access to the pool tank piping, and outdated pool equipment. With the goal of barrier-free access to pool rooms and the pool itself, along with improved safety and modern amenities, our team designed a new facility to serve the needs of the community. The new facility is conceptually structured around amenity spaces (a stick-built structure) and the natatorium (a steel structure). We oriented the building in a north-south direction to take full advantage of the summer sun path and designed it to facilitate direct access to the nearby school.
The swimming pool amenity spaces feature a single slope roof with a butterfly roof at the main entry. The natatorium has clear “greenhouse” polycarbonate panels to allow an abundance of natural lighting. Its standing seam metal roofing can support future photovoltaic panels installation. Additionally, we retained the existing solar-powered hot water system and partially salvaged and reused the demolished original natatorium structure for a community greenhouse.
Drawing on our experience working across remote Northern communities, our engineers and architects successfully navigated several challenges. These included the short construction season, extreme cold temperatures, and need for adequate water supply for firefighting without an existing tie-in.
Today, the pool serves as more than just a place to cool off on hot summer days—it offers new recreational opportunities and serves as a social hub for the community to enjoy on long, hot, Yukon summer days.
