PFAS Investigation, CFB North Bay 22 Wing

Determining contamination levels

  • North Bay, Ontario

    North Bay, Ontario

Our water supply survey was completed with each resident

The Department of National Defence (DND) historically used aqueous film forming foam (AFFF) for firefighter training at 22 Wing North Bay. It was suspected that those training activities resulted in the release of PFAS, a human-made contaminant, into the surface water, soil, bedrock, and groundwater surrounding the site.

In 2016, our team was retained to assess PFAS impacts in soil and groundwater on the base. In comparing analytical results to federal screening values and guidelines, we noted PFAS impacts in both the soil and groundwater. Based on the potential for off-site migration, a water supply survey and off-site PFAS testing program for privately-owned water supply wells upgradient and downgradient of 22 Wing North Bay was undertaken in 2017.

Based on the results, we recommended expanding the off-site potable water sampling program which we implemented in 2017/2018. That same fiscal year, Stantec also conducted a quarterly surface water, groundwater, sediment, and sanitary sewer sampling program to characterize the discharge with respect to PFAS and other chemical parameters.
