Revitalizing 145 culverts across Ontario over 5 years
A healthy culvert system allows for roadways to coexist harmoniously with the natural aquatic ecosystems running beneath them. However, over time the degradation of these structures can hinder water flows and, subsequently, harm the delicate balance that is required to sustain both plant and animal life.
Given the prevalence of water throughout the landscape of Western Ontario, the MTO required that maintenance work – ranging from rehabilitations through to replacement or removal of culverts – be performed on 145 different structures. Stantec managed the preliminary and detailed design of this program, along with overseeing an environmental assessment of the sites outlined in the proposed plan.
We are currently in year one of a five year plan, with inspections and site work underway.
