At Quebec City Jean Lesage International Airport (YQB), runway 06/24 is essential to daily operations. However, its asphalt surface showed significant deterioration, making a full rehabilitation necessary. Upgrades to navigation aids and airfield lighting were also needed to improve aircraft guidance and support safe movements both on the ground and in the air. To accomplish this critical task, YQB entrusted our airport engineering team with the full scope of the project, from preliminary studies through commissioning, including detailed design and construction site supervision.
With airport operations continuing throughout the work, our engineering team maintained close coordination of the project and adapted quickly to changing conditions. This integrated approach balanced construction performance with uninterrupted airport activity. Among the solutions implemented, prefabricated can plazas (access pits) proved particularly effective. They helped accelerate construction while improving long-term access, safety, and cable management. At the same time, advanced paving methods, including specialized mixes, laser surveying, 3D modeling, and coordinated paving with multiple machines, resulted in a durable, high-performing runway surface.
With a fully renewed runway, YQB has enhanced the reliability and safety of their infrastructure while allowing for continued growth in air traffic. This project reinforces the airport’s role as a key economic driver for the greater Quebec City region.
