When the Region of Peel wanted to understand their long-term organic material processing options, our waste management team came onboard to deliver that assessment. At project initiation, 40% of the Region was participating in the organics program, the facilities were already at operating capacity, and space was limited at other processing facilities.
Within the context of long-term waste quantities, we reviewed aerobic, anaerobic, and biofuel options for both new facility development and modified or expanded existing facilities. A detailed report on the technologies, including vendors within each class, was developed to form the basis for an evaluation/screening process that would be suitable for long-term management. The technologies were screened for applicability based on the evaluation criteria (meeting regulatory requirements, viability and availability of technology, etc.) for both high and low rate composting phases.
The final detailed evaluation of technology combinations included an exploration of criteria with respect to life-cycle inventory. The study also included a public consultation plan to support a preferred system and an evaluation of various ownership and operating options. Translation? We proposed a plan that would help the Region of Peel move forward with confidence.
