A study to prevent future flooding
The 2013 flood in Southern Alberta resulted in extensive high flood-related impact on human life and damage to critical infrastructure and property. Once the danger passed, the Alberta Government shifted their focus from stabilizing flood affected communities to supporting families and businesses impacted by floods.
The scope of our work included project initiation and management, stakeholder consultations, critical infrastructure review, watershed management considerations, technical analysis of mitigation projects and project finalization. We consulted with First Nations, over 76 municipalities, 6 non-government organizations, 6 other consultants, 4 primary water user organizations, and 4 government agencies. Our goals were to evaluate the watershed management plan, collect data and model the main rivers for predictions and warning systems, review of water management and development policies, review erosion control, proposed mitigation projects by communities and home protection by homeowners.
Providing the Government with a global understanding of water management issues including flood and drought conditions for Alberta, this study was crucial in preventing future flooding within the Red Deer River Basin.
