Where design and functionality meet

Located in the heart of Montreal's International District, the headquarters of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) was looking to embrace and showcase its outdoor plaza. Home to the offices of ICAO, the United Nations Organization and a number of embassies, ICAO wanted to provide a user-friendly space for its staff, visitors and convention delegates, while concealing safety measures to prevent vehicle ramming attacks and incorporating the principles of universal accessibility.

Stantec therefore created a strong statement to showcase the ICAO headquarters and promote use of the outdoor space. The new plaza includes playful new steel and concrete urban furniture as well as spectacular ambient lighting. Vegetation softens angles while directing runoff water through the space, thus helping reduce heat islands. The project also includes a new HD digital billboard for public information displays, the first of its kind in Montreal. The new plaza also showcases the recently-restored Marcelle Ferron sculpture, The Lark Mirror.

The project won the 2020 Grand Prix du Design in the Home and Commercial Project of Landscape Architecture category.

Project Team

André Arata, Principal

The essence of my work is to motivate the troops, listen to the needs of my clients, develop functional—yet also imaginative—practical designs, and, finally, communicate them.

Steve Potvin, Principal

It’s crucial to have good knowledge of the local culture before diving into its environment.
