Rockwood Substation

Manitoba Hydro, the province’s major energy utility, supplies over half a million electric customers—and they’re always looking for better ways to serve their people. When Manitoba Hydro wanted to improve system reliability as well as strengthen their position as a major player in the power export market, they brought in our design team on the development of a new substation.

The project included 230-kilovolt and 115-kilovolt switchyards plus their related equipment, facilities, and apparatus, all located within the rural municipality of Rockwood. Our work on the initial station development provided the terminal and facilities that would connect two 230-kilovolt transmission lines and three 115-kilovolt transmission lines. It also included the installation of an auto-transformer and control building.

All in all, we contributed geotechnical, site development, building, foundation, high-voltage structure, apparatus structure, cable trench, and oil-containment engineering services. Alongside system growth and transmission refurbishments planned in other areas, the Rockwood Substation will improve reliability for customers now and into the province’s future.
