Helping the Regina Catholic School Division create a safe, inspirational, flexible learning environment for the students and community

Imagine having to demolish the gym to your school. It’s not an easy choice, but Sacred Heart School had to do just that. The building maintenance and the student enrollments kept increasing, putting a strain on the aged facility. Student and staff safety was key, so they did the hard thing—close the gym and remove it from the property.

They very quickly realized that the school no longer fit the community’s needs and something had to change soon. With 600 students from kindergarten to grade eight in need, replacing the facility was the best option.

Working with the Regina Catholic School Division and the Sacred Heart School staff, students, and the community, we designed a facility that accommodated a wide variety of needs. To add another challenge to the mix, we had to rebuild based on the Saskatchewan Ministry of Education 2013-14 Infrastructure Project Guidelines. We designed the facility for future growth up to 700 students, creating a 21st-century learning environment, smaller spaces to meet students’ needs, flexible space, and a 51-space childcare center.

With their new gym facility—which was designed to LEED Silver standards—Sacred Heart School is now better prepared to meet the needs of their community and growing students.
