Seaspan Vancouver Shipyards Outfitting Pier Redevelopment

The Seaspan Outfitting Pier Redevelopment is a key investment in Canada’s shipbuilding infrastructure. Located at Vancouver Shipyards, the new steel and concrete pier supports efficient outfitting and delivery of large vessels under the National Shipbuilding Strategy. Built to outfit Canadian Coast Guard and Royal Canadian Navy vessels, the pier replaces an aging timber structure and is tailored to meet modern operational, electrical, and utility demands.

Seaspan Vancouver Shipyards retained us as the principal consultant, leading the project from initial concept through construction completion. Our integrated services included feasibility studies and site investigations, environmental permitting and regulatory engagement, full multidisciplinary engineering design, and full construction support.

The pier structure is founded on large diameter steel pipe piles supporting cast-in-place pile caps and a concrete deck. It integrates precast utilidors, crane rails, and tower crane foundations, as well as a full suite of mechanical and electrical systems all engineered to support the demands of heavy outfitting operations. Key features of the redevelopment include heavy-load capacity, integrated utilities, cathodic protection, environmental controls, demolition and dredging, seismic and geotechnical resilience, and constructability in a constrained environment.

Substantially completed in June 2025, the new outfitting pier is now fully operational and significantly enhances Seaspan’s ability to deliver vessels efficiently and on schedule. It also supports the largest vessel in the Royal Canadian Navy.
