Sidewalk Toronto, Quayside Master Innovation and Development Plan

Sidewalk Labs (SWL) was looking to create a new kind of community from the ground up at Quayside, a 12-acre site on Toronto’s waterfront. With a focus on innovative infrastructure design, the team didn’t just think outside the box—we rethought the box itself.

Our local and global Stantec experts collaborated with the larger team to help deliver innovative solutions that addressed SWL’s objective of creating an integrated public realm that put people first. With underground tunnels for freight, utilities, gas lines, and a pneumatic waste-handling system, the design team freed up space for more places for people and a friendlier public realm—while ensuring that infrastructure maintenance and upgrades could take place without disrupting the street. Sidewalk Labs and our team planned mobility options that put bike shares, e-bike docks, and e-scooter docks all within a five-minute walk of every building.

Integrating dynamic curbs meant valuable spaces could be used as drop-off zones or as public space, depending on the time, day, and season. Knowing communities of the future will be climate-positive, we designed distributed energy systems—advanced rooftop solar and storage technologies—to complement city utilities and assure resilience.
