Supporting current and future transit demands in Winnipeg
Addressing the demands of a growing population, the City of Winnipeg is looking for sustainable transit options to help people get to where they’re going—and that means changes to the city’s transportation infrastructure. The City knew they needed partners capable of work at a complex scale. They put the project out under a public-private partnership (P3) procurement process, and we are proud to be a member of the selected design team.
We modified the original preliminary design with our partners to build a cost-effective solution for the Southwest Rapid Transit (Phase 2) project. Combined with the Pembina Highway Underpass, this project will connect the existing transitway (Phase 1) to the University of Manitoba and Investors Group Field. We developed innovative solutions such as reusing heavy rail structures and reshaping the path to fit within the predetermined transitway right-of-way. We also proposed an above-grade structure rather than introducing a tunnel to the crossing. Other project elements in our scope included a noise attenuation wall, an active transportation facility the entire length of the project, and eight transitway bus platforms and stations. The project also features park-and-ride parking lots, a bus warning system, and transitway lighting as well as ten new intersections where the new transitway crossed existing streets.
The rapid transit line and underpass will provide the City with sustainable options that meet transit demands now and into the future.
