Providing an alternative transitway that offers a comparable commute time to the popular LRT Line
With overcrowding on the Calgary’s Red Line LRT (Alberta), the City needed to provide alternative, time-competitive transportation options for growing communities in the southwest. To do so, they engaged our team to conduct a review of the previous functional study alignment and provide functional design and public engagement services for the Southwest Transitway project.
With a strategic combination of mixed traffic, dedicated transitway lanes, and bus only shoulder lane operations, the Southwest Transitway will provide simple and timely transportation option for traveling from southwest Calgary into the downtown core. It will also serve major destinations in between, such as Rockyview Hospital and Mount Royal University.
The functional review and design included optimizing the cross-section of the road and transitway along 14 Street SW to minimize impacts to existing infrastructure adjacent to the right of way and neighboring communities. The aim? To maintain—and promote—safe driving conditions for buses and motorists. Mixed traffic operations will occur downtown, through Currie Barracks and Mount Royal, and again along the route south of Southland Drive SW.
Preliminary design is currently underway, with detailed design and construction management anticipated in the near future.
