With estimated damages exceeding $5 billion, the 2013 Southern Alberta flood remains one of the most devastating natural disasters in Canadian history. To mitigate future flood impacts, the Government of Alberta (GoA), through Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors (ATEC) and Agriculture and Irrigation (AGI), initiated the Springbank Off-stream Storage Project (SR1).
Since 2014, we’ve led SR1’s engineering design, impact assessments, engagement, and the Indigenous Participation Plan, as well as tender, construction review, and commissioning services. Our team emphasized innovation and environmental protection in the design, collaborating with ATEC and AGI, Indigenous groups, landowners, regulators, sub-consultants, and suppliers.
This project was dynamic, with strong collaboration and support across disciplines—truly reflecting our belief that we’re better together. It showed how every team played a role in delivering on a complex challenge. For Geomatics, it was also a chance to highlight the depth of talent within the group: the ability to take on a wide range of tasks using the right methods and techniques, and to apply advanced technology effectively when it’s needed most.
During large flood events, SR1 will temporarily divert water from the Elbow River to an off-stream storage reservoir. Key components of the SR1 system include a diversion structure in the river, a flood diversion channel through the adjacent land crossed by two new bridges, and an earth-fill dam with a low-level outlet that impounds floodwaters. Roadway infrastructure was modified to accommodate the reservoir’s footprint. Construction of this major undertaking was completed before the 2025 flood season, and we continue to support our clients at SR1.
With this critical infrastructure in place, the GoA can better protect communities from future flooding events.
