Strathcona Agriculture Master Plan

Strathcona County is a study in contrast. An industrial area and significant urban hamlet combine with agricultural lands to form this thriving community east of Edmonton. As part of this metropolitan region, Strathcona is experiencing growth pressure that is threatening agricultural land.

The Strathcona Agriculture Master Plan, prepared with Toma & Bouma, is a leading-edge example of comprehensive agricultural planning in a growing metropolitan setting. The implementation strategy is broad including governance, communications, land use and development planning, food and agriculture sector development, urban agriculture, agri-tourism, infrastructure, and monitoring, evaluation, and adjustment.

The Plan ensures sustainable agriculture as part of the County’s historical, cultural, economic, and environmental heritage. With community acceptance gained through an interactive and inclusive process, the Plan is full of transferable concepts and best practices. It defines leading-edge. Other counties have already followed Strathcona’s lead and are completing agricultural planning projects based on this model.
