Teck Elkview Valley Operations - New Administration and Maintenance Complex

The existing Administration and Maintenance Complex (AMC) for the Elk Valley Resources coal mine was nearing its end of life. Teck Resources Limited decided to use this as an opportunity to not only upgrade mine operation efficiency but also unlock new coal reserves under the existing facility, extending the viability of the mining operations in the area.

They engaged our team, in partnership with PCL, as part of a progressive design-build effort. This fast-tracked process involves iteratively pricing the design throughout each design milestone to optimize the cost of the new facility.

Located on a spill pile at a recently mined site, the new C$580 million facility includes several buildings. The administration building and warehouse and maintenance facility each occupy 11,000 square-metres (118,403 square feet). The complex also includes 12-bay heavy vehicle repair shop, heavy and small vehicle wash buildings, a potable water treatment plant, wastewater treatment plant, fuel depot, and a lube oil storage building.

We designed the buildings with high-performing envelopes to reduce construction time while improving safety, human comfort, ease and flexibility of use, and durability. The buildings were primarily constructed using a steel structure and insulated metal cladding (IMP).

Given the inherent dangers of working with such large machinery and in a potentially harsh mountainous environment, our team explored ways to improve personnel safety using and maintaining the new complex. We also embraced and incorporated elements from Elk Valley Resources’ Courageous Safety Leadership program into the design.

The upgraded AMC will support the mine and its operation for years to come.
