Bringing a little slice of Hollywood to eastern Canada

The first step in bringing the bright lights of Hollywood to Toronto was the assessment and remediation of 45 acres of Port Lands, providing a home for the Toronto Filmport Studios (now Pinewood Toronto Studios).

The City of Toronto’s Economic Development Corporation (TEDCO) brought Stantec in to characterize, risk assess and/or remediate contaminated soil and groundwater on 13 land parcels. Stantec worked closely with TEDCO and the Toronto Film Studios to achieve its goals—the big picture.

We conducted a Phase 1 and 2 environmental site assessment, uncovering the horizontal and vertical extents of contamination in the subsurface. Like any great movie though, we had more hurdles to overcome in our quest for success. A remedial action plan was prepared for nine of the 13 parcels of land involving excavation and offsite removal for soil treatment until confirmatory samples met the standards. Approximately 39,000 cubic metres of petroleum hydrocarbon impacted soils were bioremediated over eight months.

With a green light for the project, Toronto Filmport Studios went on to construct its facilities and grounds. It has now hosted some of the largest feature films shot in Canada.
