We provided important data for the expansion of a rural road that is growing and changing with its surroundings

Township Road 554 runs east-west some 28 kilometres (18 miles) northeast of Edmonton, in an area known as Alberta’s Industrial Heartland—home to many industries including oil, gas, and petrochemicals. The road connects workers and clients to surrounding businesses, and when increasing developments put greater demand on the existing infrastructure, the County of Strathcona brought in our Transportation group to design an upgrade.

To meet this traffic growth demand, a 1.8 kilometre (1.1 mile) stretch of the road is being paved and redesigned to add turning lanes, nearly doubling its width. We provided a survey of the impacted stretch, converted engineer drawings to a format suitable for field layout, and provided a topographic survey of unsuitable material to be removed from the road site, which is flanked on both sides by open ditches and swampy pasture land.

We worked with Strathcona County’s survey data and our own 2008 survey data to coordinate systems and height references before and during the project. When completed, the upgrade to Township Road 554 will improve the northern Alberta transportation network and make the drive easier for local commuters and clients.
