Designing an environmental management plan for a retired production facility

Located in a popular area for country residential homes, Turner Valley Unit #6 had wellsites and production facilities in operation from as far back as the 1920s. The facility was eventually retired, and an effective management plan was needed based on the environmental setting, number, age, and variety of production facilities in the field.

We provided Phase 1, 2 and 3 environmental site assessments, remediation, and field sampling. Managing this $50 million environmental liability, we documented the remediation activities and conducted field sampling to verify remediation objectives were met for soils, groundwater, and air related issues. On site, the contaminants ranged from fuel oil to weathered crude and heavy metals found in soil and groundwater. Essential to the success of the program was stakeholder consultation, with active participants in Alberta Energy and Utilities Board, Alberta Environment, Alberta Transportation and Infrastructure, Department of Fisheries and Oceans, Municipal District of Foothills, University of Calgary and landowners.
