Organizing for success

An undefined program, multiple owners and funding strategies, escalating costs, a complex site, intricate decanting—when it came to delivering the National Institute for Nanotechnology (NINT), the University of Alberta (U of A) wasn’t short on challenges. Added to that, as one nano scientist put it, “By the time this building is complete…the science will be a shadow of its former self.”

To overcome these challenges, the U of A Project Management Office, run by Stantec, implemented a war room like strategy for communication and approvals to keep all project stakeholders in constant communication. We also initiated a site analysis approach that determined the quietest possible site and managed a design that satisfied researchers’ future needs. And we helped the U of A and the National Research Council broker a lease agreement that ensured the interests of both project stakeholders were appropriately represented.

In the end, Stantec helped to deliver the NINT to a predictable outcome—on time and on its $65 million budget. NINT now attracts the world’s best minds in a field that is impacting our everyday lives.
