Utilities Kingston Asset Management Assessment and Improvement Roadmap

Utilities Kingston is a unique, integrated utilities service provider for Kingston, Ontario. They offer six municipal services through one organization—water, wastewater, electricity, gas, telecommunications, and water heater rentals. To better serve the communities that depend on these services and improve their asset management capabilities, Utilities Kingston engaged us to help.

Our team collaborated with Utilities Kingston employees to determine the maturity of asset management for each of the six services and determine areas for improving the server provider’s asset management capabilities. We assessed their asset management approaches, practices, and processes. We then drew on this information to develop a strategic roadmap to advance their asset management capabilities into alignment with industry standards. The strategic roadmap included 35 asset management improvement initiatives and prioritized these into three phases—asset management fundamentals, managing risk and asset replacement analysis, and managing resources and planning documentation.

With this roadmap, Utilities Kingston can effectively manage their asset portfolios and achieve measurable improvements—benefitting communities they serve now and into the future.
