Voltigeurs de Québec Armoury Reconstruction

The restoration of a heritage building badly ravaged by fire

The rebirth of a heritage building

Located in the heart of Old Quebec City, the Voltigeurs de Québec Armoury is the home of the oldest French-speaking battalion in North America. First opened in 1888, the prestigious building is the only Canadian armoury to be designated a historic site.

On the night of April 4, 2008, a major fire destroyed all but the building’s façade. Fortunately, the architectural integrity was preserved, as were most of the features behind its historic site designation.

The purpose of the Armoury reconstruction project was to transform the building into a multi-use facility with spaces to commemorate the history of the Voltigeurs de Québec, accommodate federal offices and incorporate a multipurpose hall for major events. The project also included development of a new terrace.

Stantec’s Quebec team contributed its expertise in electricity, fire safety and plumbing for this project. The entire design was completed using Revit 3DTM as part of an integrated BIM project.
