Site failures need thorough geotechnical surveys to ensure they’re rebuilt stronger and more resilient

Following a June 2014 major rain event in Wallace-Woodworth, the western-side slope of a rural road failed, impacting a length of the access roadway for approximately 60 metres. Acting on behalf of the rural municipality, we came in to review and suggest some remediation schemes.

One of our first steps was to review existing geotechnical information from the surrounding area including a testhold drilling program with twelve testholes, soil sampling, and laboratory testing. Our team also performed a topographic survey along the length of damaged road to identify the road and ditch cross-section geometry and slope-failure geometry.

With a slope stability analysis, our team reviewed the assumed pre-failure stability conditions and modeled the conditions at the point of failure. We then reviewed studies that laid out potential remediation efforts.

The geotechnical team issued a summary report that outlined the existing site conditions and provided remediation recommendations in accordance with Manitoba Emergency Measures Organization (MEMO) guidelines. Our suggestions? Excavate the failed soil mass, replace native soil, install a permanent drainage system, add a large toe berm, and conduct complete revegetation. Eventually, all of those suggestions were implemented under our part-time supervision, providing a permanent re-opening for the road.
