Keeping the Family Islands connected

When the International Civil Aviation Organization performed a review of 28 Bahamas owned and operated airports, there were some concerns. The airports needed to address various shortcomings, and a compliance and optimization strategy was needed to identify and plan for infrastructure and operational upgrades.

To address these concerns, we outlined the capacity required to meet the aircraft and passenger demands of today, and the forecasted growth for the next 10 years. We performed airfield assessments (pavements, drainage, electrical, lighting, navaids, obstacles) for the runways, taxiways, aprons, and maintenance and general aviation facilities and identified compliance and capacity gaps. The designs would also meet the 20-year traffic forecasts anticipated with the economic and tourism potential at these ‘front doors’ to the Family Islands and improve sustainability and the operating efficiencies at each airport.

The result? The optimization strategy highlighted the critical nature of the Family Islands airports condition, and raised the awareness of the necessary infrastructure, safety and training elements needed to provide air service throughout the Bahamas. In the future, air travel between the islands will be safer, more efficient, and better connect many of the islands to one another and to the world.
