Pearse’s Cottage Visitor Center and Related Works

Located near Rosmuc in County Galway, Pearse’s Cottage provided a summer retreat for the writer and poet Patrick Pearse from 1903 to 1915. It was here that he drew inspiration for his poems and short stories. It also served as a summer school for students from St. Edna’s, his bilingual school in Dublin. As part of the 1916 commemoration capital works projects, Heritage Ireland set out to develop a visitor and interpretative center and associated facilities adjacent to the cottage.

Employed by the architect as part of a multidisciplinary design team, we provided civil and structural engineering design services and acted as ancillary certifiers. In addition to providing works requirements documentation, we also gave input during the early stages of the project on the wastewater system and the excavation and disposal of peat. Our design services encompassed foundations and building elements, a timber pavilion, site drainage including site attenuation, wastewater disposal facilities, parking areas, and steelwork including review of steel fabrication drawings. We also conducted site inspections during construction, including inspections for building control approval requirements (BCAR), and reviewed proposals from contractors during construction stage.

The new visitor center includes reception, exhibition, educational, meeting, and café areas as well as ancillary facilities to support and educate visitors to the site for many years to come.
