Providing environmental monitoring and design for a highway connecting Brescia, Bergamo and Milan for Expo 2015
The BreBeMi highway connects Brescia, Bergamo, and Milan across 62 kilometres and is one of the most important new infrastructures funded in Northern Italy. It involves major government departments, and it’s part of the “Legge obiettivo,” key to the success of Expo 2015 which took place in Milan. As part of the construction, there were important environmental interventions that aimed to compensate, mitigate, and promote the surrounding area.
Our team was responsible for project and program management as well as technical advising for the environmental monitoring final design. We also coordinated the activities on site where a number of suppliers were involved and reported activities to the client, the environmental agency (ARPA), the region, and third parties—performing planning, contracts, accounting, and environmental monitoring design. Lastly, we designed all the mitigation measures and environmental compensation on the new highway and contributed 10 kilometres of detailed structural design on the roadway.
The environmental monitoring involved surveys for air, noise, surface and ground water, soil, vegetation and fauna, and landscape. After managing critical environmental issues (according to ARPA and general contractor procedures) and the implementation and management of a dedicated GIS/web-based system, we made sure the BreBeMi highway was as sustainable as the expo travelers were headed towards.
