Antamina Mine LE2 Closure and LE1 Integration Conceptual Engineering
Antamina retained our team to assist with the development and design of conceptual closure engineering for the Life Extension 2 (LE2) components. Integrated with the existing LE1 components of the Antamina Mine, this will help mitigate long-term technical risks. This integration within the project life cycle is essential for closure design.
Our scope includes the systematization and evaluation of closure alternatives, as well as the development of conceptual designs with Class 4 cost estimates. We also participated in the selection of preferred alternatives through a structured, multi-criteria trade-off analysis (FEL 2A).
We integrated sustainable considerations throughout the decision-making process. Key elements included compliance with applicable environmental regulations, incorporation of phased closure into the closure designs for the various components, long-term geotechnical design of waste rock dumps and tailings storage facility, and management of the pit lake formation through controlled and natural outflows.
In coordination with Antamina, our team incorporated the development of revegetation using native species, soil reclamation and erosion control, reuse of materials and infrastructure where feasible, and the safe decommissioning of facilities.
Overall, the project enhances the resilience of infrastructure by addressing the entire life cycle of the mining components, supporting responsible decommissioning and long-term stability.
