A wastewater treatment solution minimizing environmental and community impact and helping Bahrain to meet recycled water targets

The reclaimed islands of Madinat Salman will soon be home to a thriving community of approximately 100,000 people. Commissioned by Bahrain’s Ministry of Housing, the island’s sewage treatment system needed to be able to handle 40 million liters per day (MLD), with the scope to treat an additional 20 MLD. Our team was brought in to help.

To support the government of Bahrain’s strategic vision for the re-use of treated sewage effluent, our engineers designed a plant to treat sewage to the highest standards. This allows for reuse on community green spaces through the islands’ self-contained irrigation system. The design also had to cater for sensitive environmental receptors. With the location situated directly above a fresh water aquifer, our team devised methods to protect the aquifer during construction of the deep tanks and inlet pump station. The final sea outfall location was selected from ten initial options, each carefully modelled and evaluated to select the solution best for the area’s shallow waters.

Finally, with land availability at a premium, the process design was optimized to fit a small footprint. With houses close by it is shielded by a man-made grassy hill and community park—providing an aesthetically pleasing backdrop for the island residents.
