Integration of architecture, art, light and nature in a healing environment

The NCCCR is a forward-looking cancer hospital aiming to lead a global trend in how modern health facilities maximise healing and cures while developing preventions for cancer in a truly unique, sustainable and nurturing environment. Sited on a prominent corner of the Hamad bin Khalifa Medical City campus in Doha, the NCCCR has been designed as a flagship facility characterised by the integration of architecture, art, light and nature.

The vision for this project was to create ‘A Constellation of Gardens’–light, airy, humanised environments organised around a series of beautiful, landscaped areas. The design draws on evidence-based research to increase contact with the external environment for patients (therapeutic benefit) and staff (efficiency and wellbeing). An impressive 228 gardens enhance the patient experience.

Whilst demonstrably modern and fresh, the NCCCR is aesthetically in tune with its local environs and culturally sensitive to the needs of its Qatari community. The architectural language of the building bridges Doha’s modern and historic districts through a selection of classic materials (white and pale natural stones) and high performance gazing for optimum light transmission/control into the interiors. A key element of the building façade is its ‘veil’ – a contemporary interpretation of the traditional mashrabiya. The veil’s distinct geometric pattern creates a strong visual identity for the NCCCR within the campus.
