The groundbreaking and cross-border business park Business Centre Treeport (BCT) is in development. During the day, solar panels and wind turbines on the business park generate a surplus of energy. Our team, alongside BCT, is investigating how this overproduction of electricity can be efficiently utilized at times when consumption is greater than production.
For this project, our team was tasked with conducting a technical and financial feasibility study. We collected data from several established companies on the business park, and profiles were generated for the buildings that will be constructed in the future. This provided insight into the electricity demand. For electricity generation, we modeled what the two wind turbines combined with the solar panels on the roofs of the buildings would generate. The result? We found that upon full realization of the business park, ten times more electricity would be generated than demanded.
While technical analysis showed that battery storage could solve the mismatch between electricity generation and demand, the financial analysis revealed that it wouldn't be profitable. Going forward, we’re conducting a study that examines the direct connection of the battery to a logistics charging plaza and looking into how to solve the local grid congestion—something that would allow companies to expand and become more sustainable.
