Auckland Public Transport Service Improvements Business Case

Auckland is growing fast with 250,000 new residents expected by 2050. For sustainable travel to be a viable option, public transport needs to keep up with and get ahead of this growth.

As a first step, Auckland Transport engaged us to develop a fundable 4-year program of much needed bus service improvement.

We worked closely with our client and investors to develop a smartly targeted program supporting committed infrastructure investments; getting bus services into developing greenfields areas, enhancing the frequent transit network, and helping brownfields growth.

We maintained a firm focus on finding the “sweet spot” between fundability, value for public money, and service improvements that deliver the most customer and city-building benefits. We also invited investors to challenge our teams’ thinking by presenting the trade-offs and choices between different service development pathways.

The result was a funded program of bus service improvements that delivers what our client wants and what the city needs. This is expected to increase annual patronage by nearly 10% once fully in place.
