Greater Western Water Pipe Resizing

An automatic pipeline network identifier that is accurate and efficient

An information portal creates efficiencies for water system management and streamlines processes for contractors in the field

With continuing growth in the region, Greater Western Water (GWW) in Melbourne wanted to develop a tool to aid in identifying pipes in their existing network requiring upsizing to meet minimum requirements. They asked our Geospatial team to help develop an automated process to assist in assessing pipes across the region.

From a database of the pipeline system, we designed an online portal that makes it easy for employees to find and assess existing pipes in a specific location and correctly identify the recommended sizes for compliant pipe. The portal can also help GWW staff provide contractors with simple construction plans for use on site. All the requests are tracked and managed by GWW’s planning team, who can override the automated pipe size proposed when more complex scenarios arise.

The Pipe Resizing Self-Service Portal is sufficient to fulfil around 90 per cent of the requests received by the planning team, giving them more time to focus on, and review, more complex jobs. The efficiencies of the automated process have fulfilled GWW’s brief and streamlined the process for development in the region.
