Green Island Resource Recovery Precinct

With their landfill resource consents due to expire in 2023, Dunedin City Council (DCC) was looking to develop their Green Island Resource Recovery Precinct for a more efficient and sustainable operation. The goal? Additional diversion streams which would reduce disposed waste and optimize material usage.

DCC brought us in to complete business case studies for four separate facilities: a new transfer station, an improved and enlarged composting facility, a new dry recyclables materials recovery facility, and a new construction and demolition materials recovery facility. The individual business cases covered strategic, economic, commercial, financial, and management studies, and once those were completed, we completed concept layout designs.

After that? We began work on a cohesive master plan that would optimize the placement of each facility. With a constrained site and nearby residential properties, the master plan paid careful attention to environmental effects such as odor from composting and the transfer station. All this was completed in collaboration with the DCC team, without interrupting the ongoing operations of the Green Island site.

With the master plan in hand, DCC is now able to procure a design-build-operate contract and take the next step towards more sustainable operations, helping the Dunedin community diversify their waste disposal and reduce the amount of waste heading to landfills.
