State Highway 2 Waikare Gorge Preliminary Sustainability Management Plan

The Waikare Gorge is an important section of State Highway 2 (SH2). Looking to make the highway safer, more accessible, and less likely to suffer closures, Waka Kotahi set out on a realignment project—we were there to help.

Our goal was to deliver this project in harmony with environmental and community outcomes. As a result, developing a preliminary infrastructure sustainability management plan was a key element of the project’s design phase. The plan will help keep the team’s objectives on track—aligning the project against infrastructure sustainability requirements and identifying key opportunities for improvement to be leveraged at future stages of the SH2 Waikare Gorge project. Overall, it aims to manage and reduce the project’s impact on the environment, while improving local ecological, social, cultural, and economic outcomes. With targeted guidance, the plan makes sustainability a priority from the beginning. By facilitating early consideration and implementation within the preferred project option, we’re laying the foundation for sustainability outcomes to go hand in hand with project delivery.

At Stantec, sustainable design and engineering is what defines us. By incorporating a preliminary infrastructure sustainability management plan into an access and resilience improvement project like SH2 Waikare Gorge, we’re upholding our commitment to helping our clients pull off successful projects with positive impacts.
