Transportation planning advice for Christchurch’s new convention center influences Council planning

As a vital part of renewing Ōtautahi Christchurch after significant earthquakes in 2010–2011, Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre is designed as a gathering place. Signaling the City’s growth and development, Te Pae is an anchor project—part of an historic rebuild—that will help make lasting social, cultural, and economic connections between the region and the world.

Involved very early in the initial stages of the site’s master planning process, we primarily established vehicle access routes for servicing and loading and identified potential locations and design constraints for a carpark building. We also developed a parking demands model to investigate how parking needs could vary across the year and through the day in response to the different types of anticipated events. This was a critical part of the project and has since influenced Council planning for both Te Pae and the adjacent arts precinct. As part of the resource consent application, we prepared integrated transport assessments for full and partial development while also supplying transport assessment information, including a travel management plan, to support the Green Star rating application.

We’re proud to have continued our transportation engineering advice during construction and contributed to such an iconic project as part of the Christchurch rebuild.
