Drinking water in Christchurch is primarily drawn from aquifers deep underground. Christchurch City Council oversees a network of wells, reservoirs, pipes, and pump stations to deliver this water to residences and businesses around the city. After a water contamination event occurred in another town, Council identified critical water security issues in their own water supply. To secure the supply network, their water wells needed to comply with current drinking water standards—by protecting wells from surface water infiltration.
As part of a program to secure the water supply network, Council sought our help to act as the engineer's representative and contracts engineer. We facilitated an agile delivery model with fast procurement to resolve these issues efficiently. Working with the client and contractors, we worked to implement and optimize processes and guide the project's many complex parts in a streamlined manner while meeting project objectives. We provided construction monitoring and contract administration services for a series of wellhead upgrades—the physical structure at the top of a well that connects to the water supply network.
The outcome provides confidence that the infrastructure will service the community for the intended life of the asset, and that safe drinking water will continue to be available for Christchurch.
