Zhuxi Stream connects several of Tainan’s cultural landmarks, including Shuijiaoshe Cultural Park, Zhuxi Temple, and Wufei Temple. Years of urbanization had degraded the waterway, reducing water quality, ecological health, and public access.
Commissioned by the Water Resource Bureau of Tainan City Government, we provided design and construction supervision services to help restore the stream as a resilient community asset. Guided by the principle of returning space to the river, we integrated wastewater treatment, flood management, ecological restoration, and placemaking into a single solution.
Dry-weather wastewater is intercepted and treated through a gravel-contact oxidation system before being returned to the stream. The design maintains protection against 25-year storm events while improving environmental performance.
We replaced sections of concrete embankment with vegetated slopes, permeable green spaces, and habitat-rich waterfronts. Native planting supports biodiversity, while new pathways, gathering spaces, and viewpoints reconnect people with the water.
Today, Zhuxi Stream is a recognized example of successful urban river revitalization in Taiwan. By combining water quality improvement, flood resilience, ecological restoration, and cultural placemaking, the project has created a healthier, more connected urban environment and earned multiple national design and landscape awards.
