The Train Modification Building will enable London Underground to maintain the new generation of their rolling stock

Acton Works, a 13.4-hectare industrial site, was originally established in 1922 as the main train overhaul facility for the Underground Electric Railways Company—forerunner to London Transport. The existing buildings provide more than 50,000 square metres of floor space, but to provide the best maintenance services going forward, London Underground (LU) wanted to replace life-expired assets with a new facility that could cater for the maintenance of their new rolling stock.

We were brought in as strategic planning advisors to work alongside operations teams and technical consultants for TfL Property and LU Ltd. The plan? Deliver a site-wide strategy for asset management and buildings renewal. We prepared a planning strategy and program for the proposed works and coordinated the technical consultants and public consultation.

The first phase of the project included a new, £20 million, 7,185-square-metre trains modification unit (TMU) for carrying out modifications and upgrades on the new generation of their rolling stock including wheel sets overhaul, electrical installation, total train refurbishments, and major fleet-wide modification projects. The new TMU workshop will deliver a major package of repair and upgrade works on the Central Line fleet between 2018 and 2022.

The new workshop will contain four 160-metre pitted maintenance roads—as well as a bogie road for component works—and will create the capability to work on walkthrough trains that doesn’t currently exist at their Acton Facility.
