A commissioning to provide structural and civil engineering and transportation advice

Arthur Rank Hospice Charity had been in operation for 35 years, providing the delivery of essential care and services to people living with a life-limiting illness across much of Cambridgeshire. Having reached the end of its service life, was clear the building was no longer able to meet the level of demand. Since refurbishment wasn’t a viable option, the charity decided it was time to develop a new home for the hospice.

We were commissioned to provide structural and civil engineering, as well as transportation advice on the new £10 million building. After extensive reviews alongside LSI Architects on appropriate structural forms and materials, our team agreed that a simple and economic steel frame would support the new two-story structure. Our design team opted to develop the design using BIM Level 2, with our steel frame modeled in 3D using Revit—this was instrumental in coordinating our frame with the architectural and building services elements. 

The hospice opened its doors to patients in late 2016, providing services and care from their new home in Shelford Bottom. This spacious, attractive, and therapeutic environment was designed with great consideration for the patient's need and boasts vastly improved facilities that allow for increased service capacity.
