Providing our clients with the evidence to make more informed decisions on social value outcomes for the communities they create
Stantec and the University of Reading (UoR) have been successful in a research bid to secure Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) funding. The goal? To conduct a two-year research project (start September 2020) with real potential to change the way decisions are made about strategic land development. Together, we set out to create the Better Places Toolkit.
Social value is playing an increasingly important role in how we approach land development, but there’s a lack of guidance for industry on how social value should be defined and how it can be used to inform decision making and investment. Working with social value experts, Professor Flora Samuel and Professor Lorraine Farrelly, at UoR’s School of Architecture, our team successfully bid for KTP funding. The project received outstanding marks at the review stage and is funded by the Economic and Social Research Council, the Arts and Humanities Research Council, and Innovate UK. Additionally, our team lead a client and community engagement programme.
The research behind the Better Places Toolkit aims to quantify social value outcomes. In the end, it will support the planning and delivery of strategic land development for better community, climate change, and commercial outcomes.
