Sustainable power from the Victoria Nile River

The Bujagali Hydroelectric facility is located about eight kilometers downstream of the existing Owen Falls Hydropower Project, which regulates the flows into the Victoria Nile from Lake Victoria and developing a gross head of approximately 22 meters.

The project includes a 3,300-m3/s capacity main spillway with two radial gates and one flap gate, a 1,200-m3/s capacity emergency spillway, a 30-meter-tall clay core rockfill embankment type dam and a 30-meter-tall concrete gravity dam. It also required the construction of a concrete powerhouse structure with an integral intake, five double-regulated Kaplan-type hydraulic turbines, five 100-rpm generators, and a 132-kV substation.

We provided consultancy services to the project sponsor, Industrial Promotion Services, and Sithe Global Power who jointly owned the development rights. The services included developing the basic designs and documents necessary for tendering and selecting an Engineer, Procure, Construct (EPC) contractor.  Upon signing the contract with the selected EPC contractor by the project sponsor, we provided technical review services during project construction.
