Transforming brownfield land

With the right creative and practical solutions, we can transform challenges into benefits for our clients.

Working on brownfield land always presents complex and costly technical challenges. Hampton, a developing township to the south of Peterborough, sits on an industrial site that was previously used for brick making. Damage from 125 years of commercial clay extraction included pits, ridges, and furrows as well as the repositories for pulverised fuel ash from coal fired power stations. To turn Hampton into a useable space and welcoming community, large-scale mitigation of the land was needed—especially if we were to help our client change the 1,000-hectare (2,470-acre) site into a development with 500 hectares (1,235 acres) of diverse natural features.

Our assessment and unique earthworks strategy applied a process that saved millions of pounds in materials and labour. The use of local materials for fill and capping served as a cost-effective and environmentally friendly solution.

In addition, clay pits were used to build lakes and wetlands, serving both as attractive natural features and an integral part of our sustainable urban drainage systems (SuDS) solution. We brought economic and ecological value to the development by using features that were once seen as technical challenges to be solved.
