Bringing aspects of home and hotel together in a tight city context
Locke by edyn is a series of revolutionary apartment-hotels, or ‘aparthotels’, offering stylish studio apartments with the services of a hotel. edyn prioritizes convenient central urban locations, which can offer challenges for design and planning. Located on sensitive site adjacent to a conservation area in east London, bringing the Kingsland Locke location to life was particularly complex.
Our interdisciplinary team of architects and planners were involved from the early stages up to practical completion to help manage this project. We delivered a design that balances the functional needs of the hotel—including over 100 studio apartments, a gym, co-working space, restaurant, and other amenities—with high-quality design and the input of Hackney Borough Council and the community.
The engagement and design review process saw our planners and designers work together to evolve the proposals, and even increase the scale and number of rooms. Fundamental to the success of the planning application was helping stakeholders appreciate the focus on design quality and the positive visual contribution to the area. Visitors are now able to enjoy its striking facades, airy spaces flooded with natural light, stylish rooms, and sustainable features embedded into the fabric of the designs.
