Port of Leith Master Planning, Scotland

Forth Ports joined forces with Scottish Enterprise and Edinburgh City Council to develop a new masterplan for its gateway port at Leith. Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, we established the master plan to inform development proposals to redevelop the Port of Leith, Scotland, as a major renewable energy hub while not compromising the function and future development of its cruise terminal facilities.

After establishing a series of future development options with the client and project team, a full economic impact assessment was completed which took account of catalytic effects on the local and national economies (supply chain, labour market development, market profile, and related opportunities). A preferred option was identified and refined in a detailed masterplan.

We’ve continued to further develop the strategic and economic case, including analysis of funding mechanisms and potential state aid issues. Our team also examined comparative examples where investment in infrastructure has supported development of renewable energy activity in port areas. The partnership resulted in an ambitious plan to ensure Leith's assets are used to help create new jobs and economic growth for the community and Scotland.
