The Rookery Energy Park

Looking to the future of decarbonizing waste treatment, Encyclis has received planning permission for a post‑combustion carbon capture (CC) plant alongside their existing operations at Rookery South. The energy recovery facility in Bedfordshire processes up to 657,000 tonnes of residual waste a year. We delivered the full suite of environmental services to support the CC application and have been supporting the wider development since the very early days of restoring it from a 90-hectare (222-acre) former clay extraction pit.

Our role has included planning, project management, environmental impact assessment coordination, acoustics, ecology, and flooding surveys. During our time working on the site, we’ve helped deliver the Low-Level Restoration Scheme, which enabled construction and supported the development consent order for the gas peaking plant.

Since beginning operations in 2022, Rookery has been powering 120,000 homes and recovered valuable resources and by-products for reuse. With the carbon capture plant now receiving planning permission, Encyclis has a pathway to further cut lifecycle emissions, enable future heat offtake, and strengthen the UK’s net zero transition.
